Onam is a major festival in Kerala that commemorates the annual return of the generous demon king Mahabali, who was sent to the netherworld by Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, Mahabali was a beloved ruler who defeated Indra and ruled over the three worlds. To restore balance, Vishnu took the form of Vamana and sent Mahabali to the netherworld, granting him permission to visit his people once a year. This homecoming is celebrated as Onam. Observed during the month of Chingam (August–September), the festival is marked with joy, rituals, feasts, and cultural festivities.
